Volunteering Overview

JOA is proud to offer a variety of opportunities for the Jersey community to engage in volunteering, both overseas and virtually. All volunteering initiatives supported by JOA are rooted in community-led projects that prioritise genuine impact, collaboration, and sustainable practices. Our projects are carefully designed to address the specific needs of communities, ensuring they are impactful and built on equal partnerships. Volunteers work hand-in-hand with these communities, sharing a common goal: to enhance quality of life, strengthen local capacities, and contribute to reducing poverty and inequality in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Volunteering - Community Work Projects

JOA Community Work Projects provide unique 1-2 week opportunities for individuals to volunteer overseas.  These projects allow participants to engage with communities, supporting impactful, sustainable efforts while gaining a deeper understanding of global development.

The power of responsible volunteering overseas - supporting communities in the right way

Responsible volunteering ensures that your efforts support the long-term needs of local communities, respecting their autonomy and culture, and working in ways that are genuinely helpful. One of the best ways to ensure you’re volunteering responsibly is by taking part in a programme that follows the Global Volunteering Standard, a framework that ensures ethical practices and meaningful impact and this is something that Jersey Overseas Aid ensures is at the heart of our volunteering programmes. Here's why community-led projects are crucial, how volunteers can make a real difference, and how the Global Volunteering Standard teaches us about volunteering in the right way.

Our Approach

Integral to our approach to volunteering is to align with the Global Volunteering Standards, a framework designed to guide organisations in delivering responsible and impactful volunteering initiatives. It promotes ethical practices, ensuring that projects are meaningful, mutually beneficial, and aligned with the needs of host communities. The standard maintains a theme of fostering sustainable and equitable partnerships between volunteers and the communities they serve. We have therefore integrated these standards into our volunteering strategy, made effective through activities and objectives described below.

At JOA we prioritise a community-led approach, our programmes are shaped and driven by local needs and voices. Not only does this have a positive impact on efficiency, it improves collaboration and fosters equal partnership. We also ensure that volunteer efforts are thoughtfully incorporated into long-term efforts, allowing for more meaningful contributions that contribute to long-term objectives rather than isolated and potentially ineffective tasks.

Before departure, volunteers are provided with comprehensive training and preparation to equip them with the skills and cultural awareness needed to contribute effectively and responsibly. This is in part to ensure a 'do no harm' approach, as well as to further ensure genuine contribution. Additionally, a key aspect of our work is educating volunteers about the development sector. Through pre- and post-trip surveys, we assess the success of this educational focus.

Accountability is another cornerstone of our approach; collecting feedback from our local partners to determine volunteer's impact. This monitoring helps us refine volunteer programmes and maintain collaborative, productive relationships.

Finally, JOA is dedicated to evolving volunteer models to meet the diverse needs of communities. In addition to in-person opportunities, we provide online and skilled volunteer placements, all based on community-identified priorities. This flexibility ensures relevance and effectiveness in a changing world. Our volunteer programmes also play a vital role in fostering public support and trust in our mission, building stronger connections between Jersey and the global communities we serve.
