Edward Lewis appointed JOA Executive Director

31 January 2025
Deputy Carolyn Labey, Chair of Jersey Overseas Aid Commission and Minister for International Development announces appointment of Edward Lewis to the role of JOA Executive Director.

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Edward Lewis as JOA’s new Executive Director.  Edward’s appointment follows a highly competitive global recruitment process that was initiated at the end of last year. The process was overseen by the Jersey Appointments Commission.

Edward has served as Interim Executive Director since July 2024 following the very sad loss of Simon Boas. Edward will officially take up the role on 1st February 2025.

In an excellent field of candidates, Edward’s interpersonal skills, professional and practical experience in the development sector, together with his commitment to delivering JOA’s mission stood out. The panel were unanimous in their decision. Edward brings unique working experience of the organisation, its objectives and values and has been an integral part of the organisation’s professionalisation since joining JOA seven years ago.

Looking ahead, 2025 will be a busy and significant year for the organisation as our island reflects on and commemorates the events of 80 years ago. As a community that once received aid, an experience still within living memory, JOA holds a particularly profound and relevant role in giving something back on behalf of the Island. Then, later this year we have the honour of hosting government representatives and UN officials from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in our role as co-chairs of a major UN humanitarian working group. We will continue to provide humanitarian support to address the needs of those whose lives have been shattered through armed conflict and natural disasters as well as providing increased opportunities for islanders who want to pursue a career in international development or wish to volunteer overseas. Our development portfolio will be maintained using Jersey’s expertise to promote sustainable economic and human development through or priority themes of Dairy for Development, Conservation Livelihoods and Financial Inclusion.

Along with my fellow Commissioners I would like to congratulate Edward, and look forward to working with him as the organisation’s reach and reputation grows both on island and within the international community.

Deputy Carolyn Labey, Chair of JOA and Minister for International Development

On his appointment, Edward said: “It is a huge privilege and honour to be given the opportunity to lead an organisation that represents the very best of Jersey. I am incredibly excited at the prospect of building on the tremendous work of the Commission and that of my predecessor, Simon Boas, taking the organisation forward and enhancing its reputation as a world class development donor.”
