Bursaries

Jersey Overseas Aid actively encourages islanders to get involved in overseas projects. JOA’s two bursary programmes seek to financially support professionals, young people or career changers to exchange and share knowledge while learning new skills and experiencing new cultures.

Personal bursary

Our personal volunteering bursaries provide up to £1,000 towards your living costs while you give up your time for others.

Whether you're working on a bigger project or have a new idea that an organisation can help you bring to life, this could be your chance to get a taste of a new career. If you're helping others, we can help you.

You'll need to be working with a recognised organisation for at least two weeks on a project that helps individuals living in low-income countries who are facing socio-economic challenges.

If you are interested in applying to this opportunity, please fill in a Personal Bursary Application Form.

Professional bursary

If you are a professional who wants to share your skills in a new context, JOA can provide funding of up to £10,000 for extended placements abroad. The bursary can cover reasonable expenses from Jersey to country, living expenses and vaccinations but will not exceed £10,000.

Transferring knowledge and providing technical assistance is one of the most efficient forms of aid. It can also greatly benefit the individual who is sharing their skills– deepening proficiency, adding new perspectives and experience, and providing a great sense of professional satisfaction.

Maybe you’re a social worker who could support refugees, an accountant who can get a Nepali charity’s financial management in order, a physio who could train Rwandan colleagues on new techniques, or an IT expert who can take a social enterprise in Malawi to a new level. If you have an idea please contact us and we’ll discuss whether we can support it.

If you are interested in applying to this opportunity, please fill in a Professional Bursary Application Form.

Sarah Pollard, a Jersey dentist, helps to train local nurses in dental care in Soma, The Gambia, a region where there is a shortage of dentists. Sarah also delivers oral hygiene education in local schools and implemented a Fluoride varnish application programme.

Here is an account from Sarah's first day in Soma: "With so many children in pain it was hard not to simply extract teeth all day, but we began each day by attending different year groups and doing some basic oral health education. Each child was given a toothbrush and we carried out guided toothbrushing sessions. Buba, our local health official, had been trained in oral health, so he explained to the children the key elements of maintaining good oral health. Jette and I helped the children brush and then applied a Fluoride varnish to their teeth to help protect them against decay."
